Photoshop 5.5

Spot Color Channels

by Joyce Evans

With Photoshop's new Spot Color channel you won't have to bring your images into Illustrator to color and back to your page layout to position just so. Now you can do all of it right in Photoshop.

1

To begin, select the parts of your image or logo you'd like to add a spot color to. Use whichever selection method works best for you.

2

Press the D key to make your selection white, or click the default foreground and background color button. Then press the X key to make the foreground white. Then click Alt+Delete (Option+Delete) to fill with white.

3

If your channel palette isn't open the go to Windows|Show Channels.

4

With your selection still active click on the down arrow in the channels palette and select New Spot Channel

5

Now name it if you'd like to, you can also change the color here. A note about the solidity of the color, it is for your monitor only, not a percentage for print.

6

Click on the color box to choose your color. Click the Custom button to get this dialog. Choose Pantone Coated (or whichever one you want). It would make it a bit easier if you could type the color number in but you can't. To scroll through you can use the numbers on the keyboard.

Don't trust your monitor color, always choose your Pantone colors from a color chart.

You can see here the new Spot Color Channel has been added.

8

Click the D key to load the foreground as black and the background as white. Hit the delete key. Now you see the full value of the red because there is no black behind it.

8

Now it is time to save. If you are using the file in QuarkXPress, PageMaker or InDesign you'll need to save as a DCS 2.0 format. Unless your printer tells you otherwise don't select the Include Halftone Screen or the Include Transfer Function check boxes.

Your image can now be placed in your layout program just like any other EPS image. Be sure to check to see if your new spot color name shows up in your color palette, also be sure it is listed only once.
