Spot Color Percentages

So far what we have done is fill a Spot Color at 100% now we will do a percentage. Remember, the percentage fill in Photoshop is your MONITOR ONLY view, it has nothing to do with how much ink is applied at press time.

For this exercise you can start with the Spot Channel tutorial or there is yet another way to use Spot Colors.

You can start with a CMYK file--File|New choose CMYK from the dropdown menu

Windows|Show Channels and from the dropdown menu select New Spot Channel.

Select the color you'd like to use for a spot color (for more detail see the Spot Color Channel tutorial)

You can now use the color to paint with as you desire. I selected the paint brush and just scribbled here.

To know what the actual percentage is you'll have to use the info palette. The change may not appear on your screen but the info palette shows you what is really going on.


Look at the CMYK percentages, I have the cursor on the red and the K is 100%

Go to the Menu and choose Image|Adjust|Levels The K shows 100% before and after because we haven't made any changes yet.

Slide the Output Levels black triangle (left) to the right, notice the K values are decreasing. This spot is now only 57%, the further you go to the right the less it gets.

If you have a Spot color of less than 100% you can increase by sliding the Right OutPut Level triangle to the left.

Be sure to check out the tutorial on knockouts. Remember that the spot color will overprint the colors below it, it that isn't what you want be sure to knock out the underlying color.
