Ripped Edges

Open the image you want to rip the edges on.

Select|All

Edit|Copy

Add a new layer with the new layer Icon in the layers palette

Edit|Paste

You can delete the background now, drag it onto the trash can.

Draw a rectangle around the part you'd like to rip.

Click on the Quick Mask button on the toolbar.

Filter|Distort|Ocean Ripple with these settings:
Ripple Size: 11
Ripple Magnitude: 15

Click OK

Click the edit in standard mode button on the toolbar - Left button or Q on the Keyboard.

Go to Select|Inverse and press Delete.

Select|Deslect or CTRL+D

Repeat Steps 1- 8 and then try these settings

Filter|Brush Strokes|Sprayed Strokes with these settings:
Stroke Length: 15
Spray Radius 17

Repeat - but with these settings:
Stroke Lenth 19
Spray Radius 23

Now go to Filter|Distort|Shear to select the angle of the bend click on the grid as shown below. Select Repeat Edge Pixels.

 

If you goof up just click on default and try again. Remember, there is no right or wrong.

If you don't like it after you click OK, then just go to Edit|Undo and try again.

Click the edit in standard mode button on the toolbar or Q on the Keyboard.

Go to Select|Inverse and press Delete.

Select|Deslect or CTRL+D

 


 

This should give you an idea how to alter the edges of an image using the distort filters. Go ahead and experiment with more of them.
