Text with Metal Patina

by Joyce Evans

We are going to give a metal patina to some text. Patina is often added to bronze or copper by using a chemical to control the color. We will go as far as filling the text in this tutorial and continue in part 2. Be sure to see the actions tutorial which will make an automatic action out of the steps in both of these tutorials.

1

File|New. Color Mode: 24-Bit RBG I made the size 400x200 pixels. To change from inches to pixels just click the down arrow and click on pixels, then enter the number you want in the height and width boxes. I use 72 resolution because it's for the Web.

Click OK

2

Set your color to black. If it's anything else then double click the Paint chip and select black.

3

Click on the Text tool

Choose your font and size from the properties bar.

I choose Staccato222Bt and a size of 150. Use any type that isn't too thin. Type your text.

4

Select the object picker tool, your text is now an object as you can see in the object docker

5

In the Objects Docker window we need to be sure that we have the Lock Object Transparency on. See how it is depressed and lighter in color, it is on. If it isn't you just click on it.

6

Go to Edit|Fill - click on the texture fill, the last box to the right of the eye dropper. We want to select our texture so click on Edit

7

Texture Library, click the down arrow and choose Samples 7, then choose Moss.

We want to change the minerals colors so click the down arrow under the 1st mineral, click other

8

Under Name either locate Mint Green or type it in.

Click OK

9

2nd mineral, click down arrow, other, and type in or choose murky green.

Click OK

10

The Light color, click the down arrow, other and type in or choose Pale Yellow.

Click Ok

11

Let's save these settings, that way if you want to use the same fill you've got it. Click the + sign next to the Samples 7 in the Texture Library (we are still in the texture fill dialog box)

Name it (I named mine rustpatina)

Save - We are saving the settings for the texture, not the image

12

If you'd like to see the changes you made to the fill just click the preview at anytime.

Click OK to apply the texture fill and OK again

This is looking pretty good but is a bit flat. We'll add dimension to it in the next tutorial
