Dreamweaver 4 The Missing Manual
by Joyce J Evans
This is the first of the Missing Manual series I've reviewed and
found it chock full of valuable information. The part I liked best
are the generous use of sidebars called "Up to Speed"
to help the beginner-beginner. Then there are "Workaround Workshops"
and "Power Users Clinic" for the more advanced tips. There
are also "Frequently Asked Questions", "Infrequently
Asked Questions", "Gem in the Rough", "Extension
Alert" and "Easter Egg Hunt".
Even seemingly inconsequential items such as Figure captions are
very detailed, they explain exactly what is being demonstrated.
This is great for the reader in a hurry - read the pictures.
All the Dreamweaver features are discussed with step-by-step instructions.
The primary focus of the Dreamweaver 4, Missing Manual is geared
toward the advanced-beginner to the intermediate user. The "Up
to Speed" sidebars provide introductory information for certain
topics. For the more advanced user there are sidebars called "Power
Users Clinic" with more technical tips, tricks and shortcuts.
There are 5 major parts, which are:
Part 1 Building a Web Page (basics, text, image, links etc.)
Part 2 Building a Better Web Page (tables, layers, CSS and frames)
Part 3 Bringing Your Pages to Life (forms, animations, multimedia)
Part 4 Building a Web Site (site management, testing and moving
to a server)
Part 5 Dreamweaver Power (libraries, templates, history panel,
and extensions)
At the Missing Manual website you can get a free bonus appendix
which is a menu-by-menu explanation of the Dreamweaver 4 commands
for both Windows and Macintosh. The website also contains graphics
and half-completed web pages that you can use when you encounter
a tutorial which uses, "Living Examples".
I would highly recommend this book for any serious Web developer
who wants to expand their Dreamweaver skills, or to anyone coming
from another HTML editor who wants to get up to speed quickly with
Dreamweaver. This is not a "learn Dreamweaver quickly"
book, but a learning resource of great value.
