Errata for Fireworks 4 f/x and Design

Book Files
It was brought to my attention that the CD was not burned the way my sample CD was proofed. Many of the folder names and file names have been cut off and altered. I apologize for the inconvenience. Coriolis publishing has been alerted to the problem and it will not happen in the next book. Needless to say, I wasn't too pleased.

5-15-2002 Coriolis is no longer in business. The new version of my Fireworks MX book will be made available through on-line classes. Check the home page soon for an update.

Chapter 1:

Page 7 at the bottom (Hide All Layers)- the statement that Hide All Layers will hide everything on one layer is not accurate. Hide All Layers will Hide all the layers in the whole document. To hide just one layer or even one object, click the eye icon to toggle visibility on and off.

Page 16 mentions a color folder which is missing. So sorry about that. You can get that folder zipped up here.

Chapter 2:

Page 34, Step 2 in Adding Texture To Strokes should read: While you are in the Stroke panel select a texture from the Texture drop-down menu and a percentage of texture you want.

Page 37, Step 8, Add: From the Effect panel choose Bevel and Emboss|Inner Bevel. The Bevel Edge Shape is Flat, setting of 4 for the Width, 3 for the Softness, Opacity of 75 and Angle of 35. The Button Preset is Raised.

Page 51, Step 6. You need to fix the tiled image like you did in Step 4.

Page 51, Step 8 should read: Select the text and choose Text|Convert To Paths. Click anywhere on the page to deselect, then select the Subselection tool to select the first letter, press the shift key and select the second and Shift+click the rest of the letters.

Page 51, Step 12. If you happen to see the drop shadow on the edges of the sand layer then expand the image beyond the borders of the document.

Chapter 4 - There is a typo on page 6 in the Drawing a Control Panel section, number 2. The width should be 65 not 165. I have added a controlpanelstart.png file in the resources folder with the guides placed and the points added as well as a movie tutorial on manipulating the shape.

Page 82, Step 2 of the Project.
The dimensions should be 56 (not 165) X 460.

Chapter 5 - Page 139 In number 10 of the project, line 1, there should be a period after the word line. The rest of the sentence - then select Edit|All is not needed (that command is for Fireworks 3).

Chapter 6 - Text Box Project, Finish in Dreamweaver 4 section:

Numbers 3 and 4 are not necessary. Step 6 and 7 are only necessary if you decide to use the white text box without adding the background image. If you save the rectangle made in Fireworks you can open it via the background icon in the Properties inspector in Dreamweaver, or paste it. You could also use a transparent GIF instead of a filled rectangle. The CD-ROM, Movie Tutorials named textbox and textboxdreamweaver uses the update instructions.

Chapter 7 - Making a Navigation bar into a Symbol.

This nav bar was tested and it appeared to work fine. I retested it with a black background instead of the transparent one and discovered a missing step. When you mouseover the links you can see a white box. To solve this problem add this to step 9:

In the Layers panel select Layer 1 and click the right-pointing arrow and choose Share this Layer. You can close the Symbol Editor.

To fix the file named navbarsymbol.png in the Chapter 7 resources folder, follow these steps:

To fix this file double-click on the symbol. In the Layers panel select Layer 1 and click the right-pointing arrow and choose Share this Layer. You can close the Symbol Editor.

Chapter 8 - A file is missing called bookstore.gif. If you right-click on the the file name you can get it. Or you can click on it to open and then save.
